Master's Degrees
A master's degree is the minimum level of education you can achieve if you're hoping to work as a therapist. There are several degree options depending on your career goals.

Master's degrees afford the quickest route to beginning a career as a therapist. The primary limitation is not being able to conduct psychological testing and assessment (for diagnosis).

The typical program lasts two years and is funded through student loans.

Clinical PhD vs. PsyD
If you hope to become a clinical psychologist, you will need a doctoral degree. Either degree affords you the opportunity to administer psychological tests and assessments, as well as supervise trainees.

The PhD trains students both in clinical practice and research design. The PsyD is primarily focused on clinical training. Both programs range from 4 - 7 years, depending on the program.

Research degrees
There are many other subfields of psychology that have nothing to do with becoming a therapist or clinical psychologist! If you enjoy conducting research and thinking about human behavior, a research-based degree might be for you!

There are both master's level and PhD degrees in a variety of subfields including cognitive, developmental, social/personality, and industrial/organizational psychology.
